This easy chicken pumpkin porridge for baby combines soft rice, tender chicken and naturally sweet pumpkin into a comforting homemade meal. Everything is cooked until soft, creating a creamy porridge that can be mashed or left slightly textured as your baby becomes more comfortable with solids.
Chicken pumpkin porridge became one of my go-to meals when my little one started moving beyond simple purees. I liked that I could prepare the rice, protein and vegetable together in one meal, while keeping the flavours natural and without adding unnecessary seasoning.

Ingredients for Chicken Pumpkin Porridge
You only need a few simple ingredients:
- 2 tbsp uncooked rice
- 30g boneless, skinless chicken
- ¼ cup pumpkin, peeled and diced
- 1–1½ cups water, as needed
Chicken and pumpkin make a simple savoury combination, while pumpkin adds natural sweetness and helps give the porridge a soft, creamy texture.
How to Make Chicken Pumpkin Porridge for Baby
1. Prepare the Ingredients
Rinse the rice thoroughly.
Remove the pumpkin skin and seeds, then cut the pumpkin into small pieces.
Cut the chicken into small pieces and make sure there are no bones.
2. Cook the Rice
Place the rice and water into a small pot.
Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer until the rice starts becoming soft.
3. Add Chicken and Pumpkin
Add the chicken and pumpkin to the porridge.
Continue cooking over low heat until the rice is very soft, the pumpkin can easily be mashed and the chicken is completely cooked through.
Stir occasionally and add more water if the porridge becomes too thick.
4. Mash to the Right Texture
Once everything is fully cooked, use the back of a spoon or fork to mash the pumpkin and chicken into the porridge.
For babies who need a smoother texture, you can blend the porridge briefly.
For babies who are comfortable with more texture, leave it soft and slightly chunky.
5. Serve Warm
Transfer the chicken pumpkin porridge for baby into a clean bowl and allow it to cool to a suitable temperature before serving.
There’s no need to add salt, stock cubes or other seasoning.
Mum Tip
When I first moved from puree to porridge, I didn’t suddenly make everything chunky. I gradually reduced how much I blended or mashed the food so my little one could slowly get used to different textures.
Pumpkin is especially useful for this because once it’s cooked, I can easily mash it directly into the rice. It makes the whole porridge naturally creamy without needing to add anything else.
An Easier Way: Prep the Ingredients Ahead
As a working mum, I find pre-portioning the ingredients makes baby porridge much easier to manage during weekdays.
I portion small amounts of chicken and vegetables ahead of time so I can simply take what I need when it’s time to cook. It saves me from having to wash, peel and cut every ingredient from scratch for every meal.

How to Choose Chicken and Pumpkin for Baby Porridge
For chicken, choose:
- Fresh boneless chicken
- Chicken that has been properly refrigerated
- Meat with no unusual smell or appearance
For pumpkin, choose one that:
- Feels firm and fresh
- Has bright-looking flesh
- Has no mouldy or spoiled areas
What Texture Should Chicken Pumpkin Porridge Be?
For babies transitioning from puree:
Cook the rice until extremely soft and mash or briefly blend the ingredients into a smoother consistency.
As baby progresses:
Gradually mash less and leave the rice, pumpkin and finely prepared chicken with more texture.
The right texture depends more on your baby’s feeding skills than simply their age.
How to Store Chicken Pumpkin Porridge
Because this porridge contains cooked rice and chicken, cool any portion you’re keeping promptly and transfer it into a clean, airtight container in the refrigerator.
I personally prefer making baby porridge in smaller batches. If I have extra, I portion it immediately rather than repeatedly reheating the whole batch.
What Can I Add to Chicken Pumpkin Porridge?
Once your baby has tried the individual ingredients, you can create different combinations such as:
- Chicken + Pumpkin + Carrot
- Chicken + Pumpkin + Broccoli
- Chicken + Pumpkin + Potato
- Chicken + Pumpkin + Spinach
- Chicken + Pumpkin + Mushroom
This is also an easy way to create more variety without completely changing your basic porridge recipe.
