Pork Spinach Porridge

This easy pork spinach porridge for baby combines soft rice, tender pork and finely chopped spinach into a simple homemade meal. Everything is cooked until soft, creating a comforting porridge that’s easy to adjust as your baby becomes more comfortable with textured foods.

Pork and spinach was another combination I liked adding into my little one’s porridge rotation. Spinach has a more distinctive flavour than naturally sweet vegetables like carrot or pumpkin, so pairing it with familiar rice and pork made it an easy way for me to introduce a different vegetable while still keeping the meal simple.

Suitable for: Around 7–8 months+*
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 25–30 minutes
Servings: 1–2 baby portions

*Adjust the texture according to your baby’s feeding ability and development.

Ingredients for Pork Spinach Porridge

You only need a few simple ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp uncooked rice
  • 30g lean boneless pork
  • 1 small handful fresh spinach
  • 1–1½ cups water, as needed

Pork and spinach make a simple savoury combination that works well with soft rice for an easy homemade baby meal.

How to Make Pork Spinach Porridge for Baby

1. Prepare the Ingredients

Rinse the rice thoroughly.

Wash the spinach carefully and chop it into small pieces.

Trim away excess visible fat from the pork and cut the meat into small pieces. You can also use minced pork for easier preparation.

2. Cook the Rice

Place the rice and water into a small pot.

Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer until the rice starts becoming soft.

3. Add the Pork

Add the pork to the porridge and continue cooking over low heat until the meat is thoroughly cooked.

Stir occasionally to separate the pork pieces, especially if you’re using minced pork.

4. Add the Spinach

Add the finely chopped spinach towards the end of cooking.

Continue cooking until the spinach is soft and the rice has reached a creamy porridge consistency.

Add more water if the porridge becomes too thick.

5. Mash to the Right Texture

Once everything is fully cooked, mash the pork and spinach into the soft rice.

For babies transitioning from puree, you can briefly blend the porridge for a smoother consistency.

As your baby progresses, gradually leave more texture.

6. Serve Warm

Transfer the pork spinach porridge for baby into a clean bowl and allow it to cool to a suitable temperature before serving.

There’s no need to add salt, stock cubes or other seasoning.

Mum Tip

Spinach cooks much faster than rice and pork, so I prefer adding it towards the end instead of cooking everything together from the beginning.

I also chop the spinach quite finely before adding it to the porridge. It mixes into the rice much more easily and makes the final texture easier for my little one to manage.

Make Weekday Baby Porridge Easier

As a working mum, I find preparing some ingredients ahead of time makes baby porridge much easier to manage during busy weekdays.

I portion pork into small meal-sized amounts and prepare vegetables ahead when possible. When it’s time to cook, I can simply take out what I need instead of starting everything from scratch.

How to Choose Pork and Spinach for Baby Porridge

For pork, choose:

  • Fresh, lean boneless pork
  • Meat that has been properly refrigerated
  • Pork with no unusual smell or appearance
  • A lean cut with excess visible fat removed

For spinach, choose leaves that:

  • Look fresh and green
  • Feel firm rather than slimy
  • Have no wilted or spoiled areas
  • Are thoroughly washed before cooking

What Texture Should Pork Spinach Porridge Be?

For babies transitioning from puree:
Cook the rice until very soft, finely prepare the pork and spinach, then mash or briefly blend everything together.

As baby progresses:
Gradually use less water and mash less, creating a thicker porridge with more noticeable texture.

Always adjust the consistency according to your baby’s current feeding abilities.

How to Store Pork Spinach Porridge

Because this recipe contains cooked rice and pork, cool any portion you’re keeping promptly and transfer it into a clean, airtight container in the refrigerator.

I personally prefer preparing meat-based baby porridge in smaller batches. If I make extra, I portion it immediately so I only need to take out what I need for each meal.
